Polar Vortex

I'm stating the obvious when I say it is cold outside. The entire East coast is feeling it!! I am thankful that I grew up in northwestern PA and am able to drive in the snow (I actually learned how to drive during the winter). One thing I've learned is that DC does not skimp on the salt. Here's a picture of one of our cars!

We spent $30 washing our 3 cars, only to have another snow/salt wave come through. They're all dirty again. Did I mention that we waited over an hour in line for one of the car washes? It's all part of the fun that comes with winter, right? ;)

I had off today and totally babied myself from the elements. Blankets, netflix, fuzzy socks, sweats, cuddling with Posh, and hot tea made for a perfectly relaxing day. I did actually sneak out to get a manicure. I know what you're thinking, life is tough.

I'm loving the fact that a year from now I'll be in Southern California. There's nothing wrong with this cold weather, but I'm excited for a bit more sunshine during the winter months!

Baltimore Aquarium

We've been in DC for almost three years. We still have a few restaurants and museums we want to see before we PCS, but for the most part we feel that we have conquered DC. We haven't visited other parts of Maryland (Annapolis, Baltimore, to name a few) to the same degree, so the past two weekends we did just that.

On Friday, hubby sent me a text with this picture and said "for this weekend."

I'm usually the planner, so I was excited he picked something for us. I, of course, figured out where we were going in advance because I'm awful at being surprised. We headed to the Aquarium in Baltimore and spent five hours exploring all it had to offer.

Our favorite part was watching the SCUBA divers feed the sharks and fish. We had such a fun day. If anyone lives in the area or visits Baltimore, include the Aquarium in your itinerary. It will not disappoint!

Back

2014 didn't start out on the best note. We're all fine, but things came up and had me feeling a little unglued the first few weeks of the year, which is why I haven't posted anything. I know that the start of the new year is meant to be a hopeful time with a fresh start, but this is a weird/sad time of year for me historically. For instance, while I was in college, this was when I had to leave Ryan to go back to school. I still remind myself how thankful I am to NOT be in a long distance marriage. That was really tough.

I haven't picked a "resolution" for New Years, but I have decided to try to focus on positive thinking and working to eliminate undue stress that I often bring on myself. One thing I've noticed recently is that I allow the opinions of other people to make me question my own thoughts. Maybe this is sheltered, but I've decided to be a bit more private with acquaintances and self sharing. I'm normally an open book and find it therapeutic to talk openly, but it's not worth hearing negative comments. I'm not sure what has made me insecure to allow these comments to create stress for me, but I want to change it.  I'm really not a negative person, but I've been doing a lot of reading and truly believe that putting out negative thoughts yields negative outcomes, and the same with positive thinking.

The most relaxing and peaceful things for me include painting (I just started painting on my largest canvas to date!), crystals and their energetic properties (I should do a whole post on this), spending time at the beach, meditating/reflecting, and reading. Ryan tells me I'm going to fit right in with "the hippies in California" and I hope he's right! I'm thankful for a few coworkers who share and understand these interests (particularly the crystals and meditating) because it's something I've recently gotten into, and find very therapeutic.

I'm thankful for a long weekend with my hubby. We went to a potluck today, them came home and watched netflix all evening. It's chilly here!! We have nothing concrete planned for the rest of the weekend, so I'm excited to see what we decide to do.

Here's our version of an "awkward family photo" where it looks like I'm choking our precious love bug!! I'm petting her I promise!

Happy weekend y'all!

Guilty

Take a bubble bath

Hop in hubby's comfy marine sweats

Cuddle with this nugget

Burn a candle, or two

Grab a beverage of your choice and tune into the Bachelor

That's pretty much a perfect night for me!

I'm a huge Bachelor/ette lover. I file this interest under "guilty pleasures" right next to my love for the Kardashian klan. Not my proudest interests, but there's just something about cheesy, superficial reality tv shows that draws me in to keep watching! Looking forward to the season premiere tomorrow!
