two weeks (via iPhone)

Bare with me... I'm blogging from my phone! I have been so busy the last week... So busy in fact that I didn't blog, and I missed the official "two week" mark. It's been pretty uneventful. I do feel like time has slowed down though... Im ready for Ryan to come home now!!! It'll be soon though!

As I've said, I've been working extra shifts. It's keeping me busy and getting me out of the house. The house is spotless, may I add. When I'm home it's all about relaxing! I've been exercising on my elliptical at home, and I feel like I'm holding down the fort pretty well!

Also... I made a new friend!!! This is a huge deal for me, as I have had a lot of trouble meeting people in San Diego. My only friends have moved away, and it feels so good to have met someone new!! She works at the same hospital as me, and we met by chance a few weeks ago. It was so nice to go out with a girlfriend. We already made plans for future outings... So yay!!! I have one friend here now!

It's been CRAZY watching the news, as well as my friends' social media accounts to follow the snow storm in DC... I don't think I'll ever get used to the amazing weather here. When people post snow pictures it really makes me appreciate living here!! I wouldn't trade it for anything.

This weekend I will be doing what I usually do... Grocery shopping, beach walk, lifetime movies, and relaxing. I have another full week ahead of me. I'm working over 40 hours again. It'll finally feel worth it when these pay checks start coming in. Have a great weekend!

one week

I have successfully made it through one week solo!!! The cat is still alive and I haven't missed work, so I think all is well. Actually we have been very productive at my house!! I deep cleaned our kitchen and living room and filled a huge box with stuff to get rid of. I love purging!! My poor husband is on the other side of the world begging me not to throw anything of his out... the kid has stuff from two moves ago, still in boxes. He doesn't even know what he has!! I am being respectful of his wishes... for now ;)

I have been working extra and will continue to do so for the next few weeks. It'll be nice when my paychecks start coming through. It is definitely tiring but it helps pass the time. I can't believe he has already been gone a week! I hope the next weeks pass just as quickly at this first one! I have been working out and cooking in addition to deep cleaning.  Keeping busy is the secret for sure.

I work tomorrow and will probably come home and watch lifetime movies... just being honest. This weekend will probably be another boring, but productive one! I know this post doesn't have much content but I wanted to check in and post a mini update to celebrate the "one week" milestone :)

When He's Away

It has been 5 years since Ryan deployed... FIVE YEARS!!! I feel like that is unheard of in the military. The navy rotates sea duty and shore duty, so for 3 years he is on "sea duty" which means deployable, and then for 3 years he is on "shore duty" which means being at a non deployable command... but if you're a military spouse, you know there is no such thing as "non deployable." Many people deploy while on shore duty, but luckily Ryan did not. Couple that with the training he did last year, and you get 5 years of being in the US!

That is, until Thursday. But I cannot complain... his "deployment" is the shortest operation ever. I can't believe they are even sending him for as short as it is, but I am NOT complaining!! He has gone to training exercises for longer periods. However, communication is at a minimum, so that is a tiny adjustment but nothing I can't handle.

The first few days feel funny; I get sad because he is gone and I can't call him. Also, our cat got into toxic flowers not even 10 hours after he left. It was right before I had to leave for work. I had to bathe her alone, which is something that I've never done. She also had a hairball I had to clean (Ryan always does this). I am definitely missing him during these times! However, I honestly think having a pet has been super therapeutic. I do not feel alone. I am not in an empty bed at night. I remember feeling super lonely the first days of his previous deployments, but I haven't felt lonely at all. Also, I picked up extra shifts at work. I cannot imagine not working while he is gone! I would have to visit family or something. I am very grateful for my job and ability to pick up extra shifts to occupy my time!

I have a mini to-do list of things I want to organize and clean while he is gone. We are talking about moving from San Diego (where we currently live) to Camp Pendleton (where he is stationed) to help out his commute. It would make my commutes longer, but not by much. I work off hours when traffic isn't horrendous, so it won't be a hardship for me like it is for him. I will keep you posted... Have a great weekend!

I officially feel like a Californian. After living here 18 months, we finally hiked the infamous "Potato Chip Rock" hike here in San Diego. We previously attempted it one other time, but due to park hours we couldn't finish the hike. Today we started earlier, and finally FINALLY completed it!

This hike has been on my radar since Ryan was stationed at Camp Pendleton in 2009. Due to deployments and our eventual PCS to DC, we didn't get to it. I didn't forget about it though! If you're in the San Diego/Camp Pendleton area I highly recommend it. It is an AMAZING workout. It was challenging but very satisfying to finish! I definitely recommend arriving early though to beat the crowd... we waited 90 minutes in a Disneyland style line to take our pictures. We considered skipping photos altogether but I insisted we get them!

We spent New Years Day in Pacific Beach. It was in the mid sixties, but we were bundled in North Face jackets, gloves, and hats. We laughed at ourselves... being from the east coast and midwest, we should be loving the weather here. It's funny how quickly we have acclimated to the weather here. We are officially "Californians" indeed!
